Which penalty rates the SCHADS rules apply to evening, night, weekend and public holiday work, how public holidays are picked by state, and how to check a line’s penalties.
Before you begin
- You need View pay rules.
- Shifts need a work state (from the house, the branch’s region or the worker’s pay profile) for public holidays to apply.
Read the penalty table
- Go to Time → SCHADS pay rules and open Penalties and overtime.
- Each row shows the Permanent and Casual percentage of the base rate, the Pay category it produces and the Clause.
- In the pack loaded today: Afternoon shift (finishes after 20:00 and by midnight), Night shift (finishes after midnight or starts before 06:00), Saturday, Sunday and Public holiday.
- Afternoon and night rates apply Monday to Friday; Saturday, Sunday and public holiday rates apply to the hours that fall on that day.
Check public holidays
- Open the Public holidays tab.
- Choose the State and Year. Each holiday shows its date and source (Award pack or Added by you); upcoming ones may show Provisional.
- A shift crossing midnight into a public holiday is split, so only the hours on the holiday get the public holiday rate.
Check a line’s penalties
- On Time → Approve timesheets, filter Pay category to, for example, Sunday or Public holiday.
- Open a line. Pay calculation shows each category with its percentage in brackets and the clause.
- If a holiday rate is missing, look for the blue note No work state, so public holidays were not checked.
Tips
- Penalty pay categories show in blue in the Pay categories column.
- Use Test a shift with State (public holidays) to see how a shift on a holiday in another state is paid.
If something goes wrong
A shift finishing at 21:00 on a weekday shows ordinary hours only
Check the work blocks: afternoon applies when the shift finishes after 20:00. If the payable finish was rounded or edited earlier, the rate changes. Open the line and check Paid.
The holiday list is empty for a state
Holidays for that year may not be loaded in the award pack yet. Contact support.
