Running a medication audit

Schedule medication audits by house, gather the evidence from the eMAR and track scores and findings.

Before you begin

  • Your role can manage medication audits.
  • The house exists and its medicines are charted.

Schedule an audit

  1. Go to Care → Medication and eMAR and open Audits and incidents.
  2. In Medication audits, select Schedule audit.
  3. Choose the House and the Date (today or later), then select Schedule. The audit shows Scheduled with Not yet audited.

Gather the evidence

  1. Medication round: change the day to Yesterday and the house chip to check every dose was signed, and review Exceptions to escalate.
  2. Medication charts: filter Status by Needs verifying and check each chart upload shows Set up.
  3. PRN register: filter Effect by Not yet recorded, and check every PRN has a reason.
  4. Stock and counts: filter Result by Discrepancy open and check counts were witnessed.
  5. Use Export on each list to keep the evidence with the audit.

Review results

  1. Completed audits show a Score bar (green from 90%, amber from 80%), Findings and Status (Scheduled, In progress, Completed, Actions open).
  2. The footer shows how many audits are completed and the average score.

Tips

  • Run audits on a regular cycle so trends show in the average score.
  • Schedule the next audit as soon as one is completed, so no house is missed.

If something goes wrong

“You don’t have access to medication audits.”

Audits need the manage audits permission (team leaders, nurses, operations and quality by default).

“Choose one of your houses.”

You can only schedule audits for houses in your scope.

An audit shows Not yet audited after the date.

It has not been completed. Follow up with the person conducting it.
